“শরিয়া” শব্দটা শুনলেই মনে প্রথম যে ছবি ভাসে, তা প্রায় সবসময় শাস্তির ছবি। অথচ শব্দটার আসল অর্থ শাস্তিও নয়, আইনও নয় — জলের উৎসের দিকে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার পথ।For most of us, the word “sharia” summons a single image — and it's almost always one of punishment. But the word never meant punishment, or even law. At its root it means something quieter: the path to water.

প্রায় সব আলোচনা রাষ্ট্র নিয়ে। অথচ সাধারণ মানুষের জীবনে নৈতিক সিদ্ধান্ত আসে রাষ্ট্রীয় আইনের চেয়ে বহুগুণ বেশি — আর তার প্রায় সবটাই লেনদেন ও চরিত্রের।Almost every debate we have is about the state. But in an ordinary life, the moral choices we face are overwhelmingly about how we treat each other — not about state law. They fall into three circles, one inside the next.
ইবাদতWorship
ব্যক্তি ও তাঁর স্রষ্টার সম্পর্ক — যেখানে কারও প্রবেশাধিকার নেই, রাষ্ট্রেরও নয়।Between a person and their Creator. No one else has any business here — the state least of all.
মুআমালাতDealings (mu'amalat)
মানুষে-মানুষে সম্পর্ক — পরিবার, প্রতিবেশী, কর্মস্থল, বাজার, চুক্তি, কথা ও আচরণ। জীবনের বেশিরভাগ এখানেই কাটে।Between people: family, neighbours, work, the marketplace, contracts, the things we say and do. This is where most of a life is lived.
রাষ্ট্রThe state
বিচার, প্রশাসন, নিরাপত্তা, কর, শাস্তি — যা জীবনকে ছোঁয় কেবল মাঝেমধ্যে, প্রায়ই পরোক্ষভাবে।Justice, administration, security, taxation, punishment. It touches most lives only occasionally, and usually at a distance.
